BlackBerry Comes to Korea

Korea, perhaps the most sophisticated cellphone market in the world, and it will get to test the power of the BlackBerry. Buried in this busy news week where we’ve seen the Bold and the Thunder come out of RIM’s lab and a couple of iPhone rivals or so, this little piece of BlackBerry news must answer one question to become a little more relevant: will the Koreans turn into CrackBerrys like their European and American counterparts?
Note: RIM is lucky the Sout Koreans allowed BlackBerrys in. Cellphones in Korea must use WIPI, the local wireless platform. “There have been continuous requests from foreign investors that they should be able to use the BlackBerry here. This issue has been raised as a hindrance to investment,” official of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy. “The government has decided to apply exemption provisions among the regulations to the BlackBerry, classifying it as a PDA used […]

SingTel and Related Providers Get Asian iPhone Contract

SingTel of Singapore and three other wireless networks in three Asian countries (also related with SingTel) have officially been given the exclusive rights to distribute the iPhone by Apple. Globe (Philippines), Optus of Australia and Bharti Airtel of India have all been given the go ahead by Apple. There’s no word on pricing yet, but stay tuned.
We’ve been posting a lot of iPhone news lately and we are not about to slow down, not until 3G iPhone is announced sometime next month.

NBC Shows on iPhone

Apple iPhone and iPod Touch users can watch NBC shows like “The Office” for free. The video quality is not topnotch but still if you like NBC and love free stuff, you can;t really complain. Zune owners can enjoy the free shows too. NBC uses 3gp codecs and these file formats may find Zune a more hospitable place than iPhone or iPod Touch.
To watch the NBC shows, simply point your Safari browser to the NBC site. You’ll need to be near a WiFi hotspot as EDGE is obviously not fast enough to download TV shows in whatever quality they come in.

Free WiFi for AT&T iPhone

Either AT&T wants free WiFi for all legitimate iPhone users in the U.S. or not. Users have been getting free WiFi from Starbucks and Barnes and Nobles and then they haven’t. Officially, though, AT&T clients using iPhone will get free WiFi because free WiFi will be part of all the plans AT&T will be giving iPhone users. What about all the free WiFi iPhone users has been getting and then not getting anymore. Turns out it was a test run, but go over to the AT&T Nation page and you will see that WiFi indeed is free from the cheapest to the priciest iPhone plan.

BlackBerry Service: A Good Investment?

When people say Crackberry, it usually conjures up images of BlackBerry cellphones and owners with heads bent tapping on the keys with no end in sight. What people do not talk about is the BlackBerry service, a software package developed by RIM for enterprise users. To make a long story short, there have been reports of service interruptions once again.
Bad for business? You bet. T-Mobile and Bell mobility were hit. Apparently, it was planned and the service had a schedule to resume some hours ago. Meanwhile complaints have continued to pour in after the scheduled resumption. Though service has since gone back to normal, we can’t help but face the possibility that this may become a regular thing for BlackBerry users. The device has reached a point of popularity that puts the BlackBerry service in a constant expectation of a crash.
What do you think? What should RIM do?

Rogers iPhone is Too Expensive? We’ll Soon See.

Canadians are unlucky when it comes to the gadgets. First they usually get it later than even Third World countries. Second, the iPhone will cost each Canadian $799 and without unlimited data service. We have no idea if Holt Renfrew is still interested in retailing the iPhone, unless they can charge Canadians less money, which is doubtful of the luxury retailer.
A Rogers Wireless data plan for your iPhone will start at $0.05 per KB. Monthly plans come in at $5/month for a 5MB cap and a $10/month plan for a 10MB cap. Additional kilobytes (yes, kilobytes) cost 3 cents. Pricey!
Update: It’s official! The iPhone is coming to Rogers in Canada. No details on pricing yet, but a press release issued this morning (April 29, 2008) put Mr. Rogers himself on the record: “We’re thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later […]

Rogers iPhone Too Expensive? We’ll Soon See

Canadians are unlucky when it comes to gadgets. First they usually arrive later than they would to many Third World countries. Second, the prices can get out of control. Take the iPhone for example. If when it lands in Canada, it’s likely going to cost us somewhere in the neighborhood of $799 without a contract and without unlimited data service. And that is where it might get really scary!
A Rogers Wireless data plan for your iPhone will probably start at $0.05 per KB. Monthly plans will probably come in at $5/month for a 5MB cap and a $10/month plan for a 10MB cap. Additional kilobytes (yes, kilobytes) cost 3 cents. Pricey!
A Rogers iPhone seems inevitable is on its way, the question is whether or not anyone will be able to afford it and the data plan it will require.
Update: It’s official! The iPhone is coming to Rogers in Canada. No […]

Chinese 3G for 2010

It’s taking the Chinese will take a little more time before they can launch their own 3G technology. According to analyst Jonathan Dharmapalan, a partner at Ernst & Young and head of the company’s global telecommunications centre for Beijing, the Chinese TD-SCDMA may be delayed up to 2010. Trials of TD-SCDMA will begin this month. Dharmapalan says, that if you take how long GSM technology from testing to deployment, it will take up to 24 months before China enjoys 3G speeds. It’s a big sacrifice to avoid paying licensing fees to existing 3G technology. TD-SCDMA will be the 3G technology of choice during the Beijing Olympics in August. China Mobile has released 20,000 TD-SCDMA capable handsets, while Nokia is developing compatible hardware.
