Making it easier to get out of your contract?

Right now in front of the American FCC is a proposal to ease early cancellation fees when people want out of their cell phone contract early. This is an American proposal I hope will come to Canada. Here those fees can easily be over $200. In the states it is usually around $175.
There is talk of bringing in a policy that would allow new users to cancel a contract within 30 days of signing a contract or within 10 days of the first bill. Canada already has a 30 day policy called buyer remorse. However the 10 days after the first bill idea would really be a godsend to Canadians whose first bill is much more then they intended. Too many times the first bill far surpasses what you thought it would be when you add all the charges up. Such an ‘out’ would force the agent to be […]

Rogers iPhone 3G Plans: No Unlimited Data

Rogers has announced plans for the iPhone 3G in Canada. The plans range from $60 to $115 but none of them offer unlimited data. This comes as a surprise to many outside Canada. Canadians will not be surprised but I’m curious to see how Canadians will react to the rather “strange” pricing scheme of Rogers (and FIDO) for the iPhone. One consolation is unlimited use of WiFi i all Rogers and FIDO hotspots, which I’ve heard are ubiquitous enough in major Canadian cities.

Virgin Mobile’s $79.99 Unlimited Plan

With Virgin Mobile’s Totally Unlimited plan you get the industry’s best plan for calling. No texting or data usage is included but you can pay in cash. It’s a “totally” contractless plan, and no credit cards needed. Hm, I could use some of this over here in the ASEAN region.
Virgin execs unequivocally call it a better value plan compared to competitors and unlike other carriers’ unlimited plans in Europe, there are no roaming charges. Wow. Talking about game-changer, this is another one of those non-hardware iPhone killahs.

B of A Reaches 1 Million Mobile Banking Clients

Mobile banking is definitely a growth industry. Some may see it as growing too slow but it’s not the rapidity but the stability that banking appreciates more. Bank of America has posted its millionth mobile banking customers. These are active clients that regularly check their balances, pay their bills and transfer money through their mobile, after a little over a year since the service launched. The service is nationwide, though many clients are still tentative about doing more critical banking like transferring funds (only 4 of 10 transfer funds or pay bills) through mobile, most enjoy a regular check up of their funds through their cellphones. Come to think of it, 400,000 people transferring funds through their cellphones is a big vote of confidence for mobile banking.

Sprint Instinct Possible Price and Data Plan

Sprint, who is touting the Samsung Instinct as an iPhone killer, will fire a lethal shot on pricing and data service. The unconfirmed detail of Sprints price for the Instinct reveals a cheaper-than-iPhone $299 with a contract plus you can choose to subscribe to Sprint’s $69.99 Simply Everything plan. This is a cheaper Simply Everything plan as the regular plan would set you back $99.99. It’s still the cheapest everything plan of all 4 major U.S. wireless providers.
For $69.99 you get 450 minutes of talk time and unlimited web, email, GPS, Direct and Group Connect and BIS. Sprint will be hoping it won’t all come down to a phone fight and their strategy may actually work.

Motorola CABO iDEN Phone is Clamshell ROKR E8

Moto seems to have developed a real liking to the ROKR E8 design. The CABO i890 is practically the E8 with a lid. The i890 is an iDEN phone and should be popular enough to help the technology gain better foothold in the U.S.
More photos of the i890 can be found here.
Moto was the first manufacturer to produce iDEN phones and has been actively providing iDEN clients with hardware. Besides pride, I am not sure what they think they have to gain by continuing their support for an unpopular mobile technology.
